Healing Sounds
Today I was struck by how important sound is in my life. Sound can move and inspire me, frighten me, reveal sadness, or express joy.
Today I was struck by how important sound is in my life. Sound can move and inspire me, frighten me, reveal sadness, or express joy. It can shift a mood—or even create one entirely. As I enjoyed a day of retreat from the world, I found myself listening deeply.
The birds were singing, and as I listened more closely, I could begin to distinguish between different songs. I've been using the Merlin app, which has been a wonderful teacher, helping me learn about the birds around me. Now, at times, I can recognize the song of a house sparrow, a red-winged blackbird, a cardinal, or a gray catbird. There are many more I have yet to learn, but these are the voices I've come to know in the trees near me. With genuine delight, I find myself saying, “That's the gray catbird!” or “There's a blue jay!” It is marvelous to be learning something new and to feel more connected to the world around me.
Healing sounds are different for each of us, but some of my favorites are pure, genuine laughter, the wind rustling through the trees, and the chorus of tree frogs on a summer evening.
My favorite of all is the sound of the ocean. I love hearing the waves meeting the shore, their rhythmic movement somehow synchronizing with my own breathing. There is something timeless about the sound of water—whether it is the gentle caress of a quiet shoreline, the crash of a powerful wave, or the endless procession of water meeting land. Each wave seems to carry both a moment and an eternity.
Perhaps the most important aspect of sound is simply taking the time to listen. We can become so immersed in our busy lives that we forget to pause and truly hear what surrounds us. Just as the old saying reminds us to stop and smell the roses, we must also remember to stop and listen—to the sounds of nature, to music that awakens memories and emotions, and perhaps most importantly, to the quiet voice of our own souls.
